When there is no apparent answer

There have many times when I have prayed to God and the answer is not given or should I say the answer which I wanted was not given. Furthermore as a hospital chaplain I continually hear the story of a person leaving the church or their faith because years before they had prayed for a family member suffering from cancer and that person died and God didn't answer their prayers and so left the Church and faith. I found that a difficult statement to answer but still showed care for these people. getting back to my own story I prayed for years for God to cure my alcoholism but he didn't seem to answer- I still kept drinking and even after at least 3 stays in rehab. After a car accident I found myself in a police lock up where I was strip searched, and the first one in and last one out and I felt so filthy that I went out and drank till I was a crying drunk. A Bishop came and prayed with me that night and then I went home with my wife the next day. I lost my job as a priest and I have not had a drink since that day 29 years ago. I discovered that God does His part but I have to do my part in both the journey of sobriety and faith and my prayer was answered in God's time not mine. the original text should read "keep on asking"
