Dealing with differences in belief

Some years ago in a parish in Western Australia I preached a sermon on the cost of discipleship. the passage was from Luke 14 and a comment was made on vs26" Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple". I suggested that this passage should not be taken in a literal sense but rather as putting Christ first in our lives. a parishioner at the end of the service shook my hand at the end of the service and stated angrily " I'm never coming back to this church after what you said today". HE explained at the door that words spoken by Jesus should be understood literally and then stormed off. I left that parish later but did not see him. I had forgotten about this experience until one day in Queensland I pulled up in a garage and the car next to me was this man and his wife. Imagine my surprise when they came over and greeted my wife and I as long lost friends and during our conversation he apologized for his anger back in Western Australia saying he had family problems at the time- a true reconciliation.
