Lent Day 11: Pay it forward

The Lenten lesson today is about Jesus talking about loving your enemies and do good things for the people who don't like you.

Most of the time, I'm unaware if someone doesn't like me. Maybe because I don't get out much, but more likely I go out of my way to do good deeds.

I've been trying to reimagine the American Way and be less self interested and more collaborative. That's a result of my life in an intentional cohousing community.

In the outside world, I'll hear, "If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask."

In the cohousing world, the comment would be, "You need a jump? I have cables," or "You're in the hospital, I'll stop by on my way back from the store."

I've also learned that it's okay to ask for help. Last summer, I was at the Longmont Sonic drive-in. I left the parking lights on and the battery was dead. I walked up and down the row of diners and asked a woman in an SUV who was just finishing up if she could help me start my car.

She was more than happy. "My husband bought me this thing and it's the first time I've used it," she said while rummaging around in the back and pulling out one of the self-contained battery chargers. "I knew it would come in handy someday."

We walked over to my car. She attached the clips to the terminals and my VW turned over.

"Remember to pay it foward," she said as we parted ways. I haven't had an opportunity to add to the karmic universe.

Don't be surprised if you're stranded on the road or need a ride to the doctor, and I show up to assist you.
