Lent Day 8: Is the Golden Rule a quid pro quo?

Tony Orlando and Dawn performed a song called "Knock Three Times" The refrain is:

Oh, my darling, knock three times
On the ceiling if you want me
Twice on the pipe
If the answer is no

At least it's honorable and doesn't give false hopes to the knocker. The lenten lesson is based on the scripture about knocking on the door and you'll be given what you're seeking.

When the door is answered, you don't know what the response will be. Regardless, you're supposed to be gracious for whatever you're given.

In my experience, I've found that as a door answerer, I sometimes am asked for a favor from a person who is a chronic "taker" who takes advantage of my good nature and never reciprocates. Maybe I expect too much when I don't think that I should have to ask for a payback.

The other day, Diana asked one of the neighbors if she could borrow a cat fence to see if it would work with Moon. The neighbor's partner soon came over and asked when I could help him move his dead Christmas tree that's been on the porch so long, it was now a Valentine's Day tree.

I should help him, who is a chronic taker, who never offers up assistance. Maybe the Golden Rule is a quid pro quo.
