Lent Day 32: Surprise, it's me, Jesus, and I'm here to save you!

My horoscope said today, "Monitor what you agree to and know how to draw the line when necessary." That's easy advice for me to follow. I don't make many promises at all since I don't like feeling rushed because I put off their fulfillment because I didn't want to take on the task in the first place, or over committing and nothing gets accomplished very well.

When I was a chronic over-achiever, I often over promised. I was stressed out, but that was a sign of me following the American Way. Over the years, I realized that it didn't really matter if I bit off more than I could chew because not many people paid attention unless the task wasn't completed.

If I were a Jewish pharisee I could picture Jesus as a pompous braggart when he said stuff like, “Very truly, I tell you, whoever keeps my word will never see death.” The Jews believe that a Messiah would return to restore justice following a war between good and evil. They didn't think it was this guy.

What if Jesus went along being nice and doing good deeds and nobody found out about his mission? If he died unnoticed, would he have risen from the dead after three days? The Jewish literature also says this will happen.

Jesus returning to redeem the world as a big surprise might have had more impact.

  1. alanohashi I've been reading your posts and with this experiment closing, I wanted to share that I laughed out loud at the "Very truly, I tell you..." comment. MG, let's imagine no one knew about Jesus. Brilliant.
