I can’t remember the last time I made a promise to someone other than myself. Most of the promises I make to myself are left unfulfilled… covered in a dark cloud of misery and failed attempts to achieve what I truly want. I try… and I’d like to think that is what’s most important.
One of my long term promises to myself is to continue to write for as long as I live, I hope that’s a promise I’ll be able to fulfill. Maybe one day someone will promise me something and I’ll think back to this prompt and smile. Secrets and promises make people who they are.
As my finger hovered over the submit button, I found myself suddenly reminded of my first submission from this year’s 40 days & 40 writes program, when I wrote about my friend Jason who I exchange journals with. One day, several months after Jason and I had exchanged journals last, he texted me out of the blue and said that he would always protect me, even if it was only in writing. What he meant was that the words I’d entrusted him to read would always remain between us, never to depart from his lips. He promised me that my secrets were safe with him, and I know that his promise will stay true forever. No matter how much time passes I’ll always trust Jason.
