I’m an introvert/sensitive and being in loud places or around a lot of people can be overwhelming. I always carry earplugs just in case I need them to dampen excess noise or conversation. I can’t enjoy going to a movie unless I wear earplugs. I need a lot of relief and escape.
As a child my way to deal with my nature was to always have a book with me. Reading would help tune out the world and transport me to whatever adventure was in the book. If I was at home, I would escape into nature; climb the maple tree in our front yard, walk down to the local park,or just be outside. When the girl scouts turned me on to camping, that became a favorite escape. Even now, many, many years later, there is nothing like sleeping out in a tent, listening to all the night sounds.
Singing has also been a lovely way to lift my spirits. My first singing I can remember was singing hymns in church, my favorite songs were the Christmas songs sung during Advent and Christmas. “O Come O come Emmanuel” and “O Holy Night” are still two of my favorites.
Books are still a go to for relief and escape but my choice of reading materials has changed, I like reading inspirational stories. Writing is another way to chill and reorder my unease. I started writing my own stories in the second grade, usually in class when I should have been paying attention. I was an on again/off again writer, but now as I age, I find myself writing more. I took a Writing a Spiritual Memoir Workshop and that jump-started my writing again.
In high school, I became involved with ceramics. Working with clay was such a tactile, enjoyable pursuit. I took as many classes as I could my four years of high school. After high school, I would occasionally find a class to take, just to keep my hands in the game, but six years ago I found an Art Center near-by where I take a weekly class. I also have a place at home where I work. It is very meditative for me, there is an idea, sketches of the idea and then the process of bringing the dream to fruition. Often I make slight changes to the original idea as I work with the clay. I enjoy molding it with my hands and carving it as it becomes leather hard.
Reading, writing, singing, nature and clay all provide a relief or escape, all to me are forms of prayer that can put me in touch with the divine.
