I am not sure what this prompt is asking exactly. Are they asking if I have received counsel or relied on an unpopular source for information? The subject header that came with today’s email and prompt was “counsel of the wicked”, or something like that. Unpopular is not the same as wicked so I am struggling to figure out I am being asked to write about with this prompt. Am I being asked about some of my ideas or ideas that about ideas that are influential or viewed as important in the larger world somewhere?
I just found myself going off on a tangent and wanting to return to thinking and writing about yesterday’s prompt!
Maybe think about or consider the word unlikely and focus on that, to come up with an answer that has more relevance for me, so that I can talk about or write using this prompt.?
Maybe talk about how ideas or opinions sometimes seem to come from unpopular sources within the dominant culture but over time, as these ideas gain more of a foothold, or take root in the hearts and minds of larger groups of people within a community they become widespread or accepted?
When thinking about all the ways in which science and medicine have been recruited to oppress groups of people- to justify (always based on bad or inaccurate science), how in the nature vs nurture debate “genetics” has been used to justify systemic racism-I would say that even though those ideas became popular, they were literally wrong and could be called the counsel of the wicked. Certainly religion haas been used to oppress people as well.
Olay, those things were not unpopular in their heyday, there are still people who don’t want systemic racism and other ideas they hold, for whatever reason, challenged.
I’m starting to feel really frustrated with this question because most of the things that I think of as “counsel of the wicked” are actually coming from established and popular sources of information within the dominant culture, or at least they were at one time.
I usually love these prompts, but this one, not so much. I may return tonight to read the blog and see what others post.
