Lent Day 6: You're free to take advantage of my good nature

I grew up with "Superman's American Way" pounded into my head from the moment I looked up from the hospital bassinet. You know, "faster than a speeding bullet, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound?" I'm a rugged individual and don't need any help from anyone.

American's are programmed to avoid debt, owe anyone, particularly for help other than monetary.

Asking for help was difficult for me until I had to lean on a couple of friends when I was unable to fulfill obligations when I was very sick in 2013. There were two work assignments that had deadlines. There was no backup. I was confident that I'd be back on my feet in time, but that didn't happen.

My pals stepped up and completed the tasks with no direction from me since I was drugged up and out of it. I figured out that I don't have to have my finger in every pie or be sure my prints are plastered all over projects.

Today's lenten story is about Jesus saying that we shouldn't be "takers" when we ask people to do a favor. There are the self-serving who ask me for help. I'm happy to fulfill their request, even if they are taking advantage of my good nature.

"Forgive us out debts as we forgive our debtors." I think Superman would be okay with reimagining his version of the American Way.
