Lent Day 3: Right Place, Right Time

This was the first time I'd heard about Mathias, being the 13th disciple to take the place of Judas. His first and only appearance is in Paul's account in Acts. This is a guy who was in the right place at the right time.

I'm a Presbyterian who grew up in the predestination "what does the future hold" camp. Mathias was going through life, a dedicated brethren and, pretty much, out of blue, gets voted to fill the vacant roster spot.

This prompted me to think about a new story. My second novel. What happened to Mathias?

Seems like the premise for "The Lenten Murder" A poet named Riley been going around to the poetry readings at some of the local coffee shops Riley's schtick is, rhythmic stories about how it's better to be nice to people and do what you can to help the downtrodden.

His 12 person road crew traveled in two RVs and were stuck one town back because one member named Rowan was missing. Rowen and manager Mathias rented a car and forged ahead so they could get to the venue at the appointed time.

Mathias has spent an entire career trying to link up with a gravy train client. He heard Rowan at a show in Chicago and approached Rowan. Mathias wasn't greedy and wanted to Riley succeed with his help in the background.

Mathias and Riley came into town and had finished checking in at their hotel when there was a loud din from a big crowd outside the front entrance.

"Riley, Riley!" chanted the throngs. "We've been expecting you. We arranged for you to walk the red carpet to the theater across the street." There wasn't actually a red carpet but a walkway spray painted red by one of the local grafitti artists.

"We'll be down in a few minutes," Mathias said greeting the revelers as an ambulance screamed through a red light followed by a fire engine and a police car.
