‘Do you think you love writing so much because I used to read to you as a child?’ my mother asked me today as we were doing yoga.
I developed an interest in writing during seventh grade. I hadn’t been reading a lot during that time and was always looking to get back into it, but struggled to find books that I enjoyed. One day I found a book titled “Bambi” on an app called Wattpad, and I was quick to fall in love. ‘Bambi’ was written in a very different style and context than I had been used to in the past. The book contained taboo subjects that I knew about but had never seen in written text, especially not in the explicit and blatant manner they were in this book. I observed that the characters in this story simply spoke their mind, and I found the concept intriguing. I had never met anyone like the characters in this book; I had spent my entire life surrounded by the same people… and I waited diligently for the time when I would be able to read and join the characters of ‘Bambi’ in their unique world.
When I finished reading ‘Bambi’ I was quick to begin hunting for a new book of a similar tone; however, I found nothing that gave me the same thrill. I figured to myself that if I couldn’t find another book that I liked, I might as well write my own. Then, sitting in my sustainability classroom as a seventh grader, I began writing my first book. Of course, that book ended up taking me two years to write, but eventually, I found myself with a finished product and a newfound love for writing. Reading that Wattpad book, in a way, changed my life, and led me to find my one true love; writing.
Writing has helped craft me into the person I am today; however, I do believe that if I didn’t write I would be a person whose ideals aligned more with society. Writing, journaling to be more specific, has truly allowed me to explore my thoughts and question everything I once believed. Writing has turned me into a real person. After I began writing I felt as though I was transformed from a simple human walking this earth to a person who had real thoughts and opinions which I had generated on my own. I often find myself wondering if my life would be easier if I spent less time without a pen in my handwriting out my most inner thoughts; although this scenario is a possibility, I doubt anybody would be interested in my life later. If we, as humans simply come and go, live and die, then what is the point of our lives if we don’t each leave our own unique mark? The earth has gifted me with a safe home, and in turn, I have gifted it with my written word. Some people have children, others work hard to ensure they leave a brighter future for future generations, and I write…
