When you're desperate, sometimes you have to act against your better judgement and hope either no one notices or cuts you some slack if you're outed.
I've been at the end of my rope a few times over the years. When I was recovering from my deathbed illness, that was a financially challenging time for me when medical bills started piling up and the creditors were pounding on the door at the same time.
The Lenten lesson today is about the prostitute confronted by a bunch of guys who were ready to stone her. Then Jesus showed up and delivered his classic line, "Whoever has not sinned, cast the first stone." The crowd soon disperses.
The only time I felt like the hordes were going to stone me was when I had to prove myself as being "poor." Claiming unemployment and applying for food stamps were very demeaning processes.
Other than a few bumps in my road through life, things have been going pretty well. Being a creative entrepreneur, I wake up every morning unemployed and thinking about my next project and the one after that.
So far, I haven't had to rob banks or knock over a 7-Eleven to keep myself afloat. Now that I'm in my twilight years, materialism is less of an interest of mine.
Rather than saving and accumulating I've been spending and getting rid of stuff. I promise to get rid of my baseball card collection by the end of 2023, 2025 at the latest.
