When I gave money to a panhandler, I used to think there was a transactional agreement. "I'll give you this dollar if you buy food, not cigarettes or booze."
Of course the recipient would say, "Yes" and I'd be on my way.
Then it came to the point that I didn't give cash to individuals, instead saying, "f they want to benefit from my money, go to the homeless shelter or the food pantry."
Jesus cured a guy who was disabled for 38 years and told him to be on his way. It was the sabbath the the orthodox Jews got on the now happy guy for rolling up his mat because it was the Sabbath. The Jews chastised Jesus for performing good deeds when he should be pious. "God works all the time and I do, too," Jesus retorted.
I thought about all the money I'd wasted over the years buying an extravagant meal, that extra beer or the electronic gadget I could live without. That's when I decided I should give money to someone who needs a hand up or a hand out, it didn't matter. They can spend it how they wanted.
"I'd just blow it," is what I say, paraphrasing Johnny Hooker in the "Sting." "Spend it on something that will make you happy. Better you than me."
That's a reference to the money Robert Redford and Paul Newman con out of crime boss Doyle Lonnegan.
Give freely with no conditions, especially on the Sabbath.
