Lent Day 16: Yes, and ...

I'm not one to pass judgement on people. It's odd to me when I hear others respond dismissively. I took a workshop be a friend named Anne called, "yes, and, yes but."

The exercise is a great way to practice active listening and collaboration. It encourages participants to build on each other's ideas "yes, and ...," or close down possibilities, "yes, but ..." with dismissive or close minded thoughts.

The Lenten lesson about the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus uses the "yes, and" approach when he asks the woman for a drink of water. He responds with all the reasons why she shouldn't feel bad about honoring his request. The woman uses "yes, but" by pointing out her faults.

When I'm confronted by "yes, but" people, I turn around their comment and respond with "yes and."
