Lent Day 10: Check your self interests at the door

The world is in a state of divisiveness. I can't figure out why individual liberty has moved nations to question the collective good of the whole.

Why can't we just all get along?

One of my college majors was political systems theory. We studied philosophers like Thomas Hobbes who wrote about the social contract he referred to as the "Leviathan." The larger than life person consisted of an interconnected people doing their part to keep the Leviathan moving.

Critic said that in a pluralistic society, the social contract wouldn't work because of too many individual self interests.

What is we checked our egos at the door, but as citizens we should make decisions based more on how the many will benefit.

I live in Colorado. We have high taxes, legalized marijuana, the stat government is dominated by Democrat. We have one of the most robust economies in the nation, pretty good roads, and programs that benefit people.

I saw a social media post about the least educated places in the U.S. The bottom 25 are states in the deep south, which also have the highest rates of obesity and ill health. The top 20 states are mostly northern states like Colorado.

My conclusion - what makes for a great nation? One that takes care of its citizens in a less self interested way.
