THUMP!!! That was the sound I heard as I ran my 2017 honda civic ext over what I believe to be a record-breaking pothole. I’d tried swerving to avoid the hole but it was far too large… Only the driver's side wheels were spared. After a few seconds of continued driving, I allowed myself to exhale the breath I’d held in since going over the hole. Despite the terrible sound I’d heard, and the slight jump I’d felt as the car struggled on the unkind road, I told myself that everything was okay. My tire was still attached, the car was still running, and I was driving down the freeway rowing through the gears without any problem. 4th gear… 5th gear… and finally 6th gear..
That was when it happened: It began almost subtly, The car began to feel uneven. The left side of the vehicle felt as though it was sinking to the ground, and the steering wheel suddenly became heavier; in that instantI felt a shift between my hands. The steering wheel was forcing left, and as if on cue a piercing whistling sound consumed my ears. It was like a gust of wind on a cold winter's day swept by me. But the gust simply kept coming and the volume kept increasing.
BEEP! sounded the car, and a yellow light flashed on my dashboard. TPMS; Low Tire Pressure, the warning read. It was at that point that I was sure something was wrong. I considered pulling over into the emergency lane but figured it best to drive to the next exit since it was closer to my final destination, and I didn’t like the idea of being stuck on the interstate.
After I’d pulled over, and realized the results of my misfortune; an angel came to save me. Yet despite all the help I received, I made an incredible mistake that cost me any sense of happiness I had left in the day. I placed the jack in the under the wrong part of the car and lifted it significantly before realizing what I’d done. This mistake left a dent underneath my car and possibly made my hood uneven. The results of my transgressions are not visible to the public eye, and anyone who looked at the car wouldn’t be able to see even the slightest difference but unfortunately, I’m aware of its existence. Today, I made a mistake and left a permanent mark on one of the things I care most about in this world… A mistake I could have easily avoided had I thought things through a little better and taken things at a slower pace.
Even though the tire was covered under warranty, and my car sustained what some may consider minimal damage, today is a day I won't easily forget. Today was a learning experience that I would’ve rather avoided, but it happened, and now there’s nothing I can do about it or the damage the car sustained because of my recklessness. This is an internal block I won’t recover from easily.
P.S I received a new tire hours after the incident and the car is running as if nothing happened. My grief however for this incident is far from gone.
