I was a chaplain on the heart ward and every day I would have a strong urge to visit a person in a single room but resisted because the patient list showed him to be "atheist". One day I entered his room and introduced myself as the ward chaplain. He told me he was an atheist and not interested in religion. I said that I was a human being and I was very interested in other human beings. He asked if I could find a chair so we could talk After finally getting a chair I sat down and he did most of the talking with a few prompts from me. After an hour or so of animated talk from him he told me it was the first time he had spoken to anyone about his inner thoughts and thanked me for coming. I went away from that room aware I had been sitting on holy ground!
